In contemporary political philosophy, Kant is considered the reference author by those who believes that modern thought results in a theory of freedom and of equal consideration and respect for each person. In such a way Kant’s political philosophy was associated with the teachings of Rousseau and to the theory of social contract. This book proposes a comparative study of Kant’s and Rousseau’s thought dealing with the problems of right, politic and state. In their common agreement to rational idea of republic, that crosses the borders of the state and prefigures a cosmopolitan order, the author interprets each of the two thinkers starting from different principles, in some cases radically contrasting. In such an antagonism in the theory of human rights the tendency contradictoriness, that coexisted in modern forms development of political power, appears.

Nico De Federicis carries out a research activity at the Political Science Faculty of Pisa University, is editor of the “Bollettino telematico di filosofia politica”, and collaborates with numerous Italian and foreign magazines. He published the volume “Moralità ed eticità nella filosofia politica di Hegel”, Napoli, Edizioni Scientifiche Italiane, 2001.
