The study of images in historical contexts allows us to identify and map changes in our mental landscape -- to understand how habits of perception and symbolic systems of the past differ from ours, and how nonetheless they continue to influence us. This volume centres on the ways images have been used to support or criticise political discourse; to amuse, frighten or titillate the public in different epochs, while proposing critical approaches to their study.
